Did You Receive an IRS Audit Letter?

Have you received an IRS audit letter or notice and don’t know what you should do next?  Sometimes the response you need to provide might be simple, while other times it can be extremely complex. Our tax CPAs can help you understand what the IRS audit letter is asking for so you can respond accordingly and put this tax matter behind you.

An IRS audit letter can be triggered for a number of reasons :

  • The IRS finds a discrepancy on one of your tax returns and needs an explanation.
  • An amount paid is short of what the IRS calculates as due.
  • You have been selected for an audit because of excessive deductions
  • You failed to respond to previous correspondence.

Tip: The IRS won’t send you an email about any of the above issues.  They always send you a letter by mail. If you receive an email, you can be sure it’s a scam.

If it’s a discrepancy letter or balance due, the response can be fairly simple to prepare. It’s always a good idea to have a tax professional review or develop any response you need to provide to the IRS, especially if you’re dealing with complex tax issues.

If you’re being audited, you’ll need to prepare for your meeting. The IRS Revenue Agent handling your audit has probably requested certain records.  It’s usually a good practice to have a tax professional read the IRS audit letter to help you get ready and guide you as to what you should be willing to provide to the IRS and what you shouldn’t. For example, if the IRS wants your QuickBooks file or online access, should you provide all years of data? You probably only want to provide the IRS officer with the year in question; otherwise, you’ll open yourself up to more scrutiny than necessary.

While a tax audit can be extremely stressful you can find peace of mind by having a Boca Raton CPA on your side, representing you through the entire process.
